A Minute With Suraj Kurtakoti, Candidate for Board of Education

The Farmington Republican Town Committee welcomes its newest member and candidate for the Farmington Board of Education, Suraj Kurtakoti.

Suraj, a first generation immigrant and citizen from India, has a profound interest in the well-being of children and of the Farmington community.  With the goal of providing health and mindfulness benefits to students and teachers, Suraj organized and taught yoga and meditation classes. Over the past several years, Suraj has also been an active participant with the Hindu Volunteer Organization.  Through this organization, he led and participated in the traditional Indian festival of "Raskha Bandhan" with the Farmington Police Department.  Suraj has updated this ancient custom to pray for the safety of officers and to demonstrate a bond of appreciation between the Police Department and the Indian community.

Suraj graduated from Penn State University with a master's degree in Business Administration. A keen negotiator and skilled communicator, Suraj has honed his leadership skills by serving as a board member of the Southwest Village Condominium Association.

Suraj has been married to Dr. Sowmya Kurtakoti since 2004.  He is the proud dad of Rrutu, a Farmington High School student, and Megha, a student at Irving Robbins. Suraj promises to bring a fresh and energetic perspective to the Farmington Board of Education.
